Your session is designed to get multiple looks to create a varied portfolio to meet your marketing needs. Whether you want to get something more dramatic or commercial, have a specific idea of what you need before you come in, and you will get the most out of it. We will chat on the phone before your session to discuss your looks.

Your booking fee includes consultation, session time, Heike’s expert photography and posing skills, and TWO fully retouched, high-resolution digital images. Additional images are purchased separately immediately after the session. You will only select and buy the photos you love at that time. All purchased images will be retouched and delivered within five business days. Each image includes a commercial license to use on your website, social media platforms, and print marketing.

Hair and makeup are personal preferences. We want you to be confident in how you look and feel. A professional makeup artist can give you that boost, which will show in your final images.

1. camera ready hair & makeup:

A professional makeup artist can give you that boost, which will show in your final images. We work with a preferred team of Professional Makeup Artists to provide you with fantastic hair and makeup so that you are fully camera-ready.

2. do your own makeup?

You are welcome to do your own makeup. Be sure to have your hair and makeup completely done when you arrive; there won’t be time or space to do it. You will receive a makeup/grooming guide to help you look your best under studio lighting.

Clothing is a form of expression, and the clothes you choose to wear will reflect your personality in the images. My best advice when choosing clothes is that the simpler, the better.

  1. FOR A SLIM LOOK, form-fitting clothes are definitely best. Look for figure-hugging clothes that move well with your body. Avoid blousy or boxy tops, as they will make you look bigger on camera.
  2. THINK TEXTURES—Textures like lace, ruffles, and ruching add visual interest without overwhelming. Look for textured tops in solid colors. Avoid patterns as they may detract from your face.
  3. VARIETY OF COLORS—something light (ivory, white, pastel), something dark (black, charcoal gray, navy), something with a pop of color (something that brings out your eyes is best.)
  4. LOOK FOR LAYERS—Add a form-fitting jacket or slim-fit knit cardigan to cover and slim arms.
  5. SLEEVE LENGTH—Consider longer sleeves. 3/4-length and long sleeves are universally flattering and slimming. Sleeveless is great on toned arms; pair it with layers (see above) to slim the arms. Avoid cap sleeves.
  6. BRING COORDINATING BOTTOMS—Many shots are 3/4 length. Bring pants or skirts that match your favorite tops; that way if your knee or hip is in the frame, you’ll be stylishly covered.
  7. FLATTERING NECKLINES—Scoop, cowl, or V-necks are great options. Avoid high-neck tops, as they may make your neck look cut off in pictures.
  8. JEWELRY—Select jewelry that speaks to your style. Subtle? or bold? You choose.
  9. NAILS—Wear clean, manicured nails. Headshots often include hands in the frame. Neutral colors, a simple buff, or a French manicure are recommended.
  10. UNDERGARMENTS—Bring appropriate undergarments, such as strapless bras so your straps don’t show, seamless panties, and shapewear in appropriate colors.

GUYS:

  1. FOR A SLIM LOOK, form-fitting is best! Look for slim-fit shirts and jackets. Avoid boxy or loose tops, as they will make you look heavy on camera.
  2. AVOID PATTERNS—Avoid patterned shirts and graphics, as they may detract from your face. The one exception is ties—print ties will add a great touch!
  3. COLOR—Bring a variety of colors– something light (white, gray, pastel), something dark (black, charcoal gray, navy), something with a pop of color (something that brings out your eyes is best.
  4. LOOK FOR LAYERS—Add a form-fitting jacket to create a visually slimming look. Pair a V-neck sweater with your shirts to vary your look.
  5. CASUAL LOOK—Going for a casual look? Consider long sleeves. A long-sleeve knit henley looks much more polished and put together than a short-sleeve t-shirt. We could also roll the sleeves on a button-up, collared shirt for a more relaxed look.
  6. PROFESSIONAL LOOK—A collared, button-up shirt and suit jacket are your best friends! You can’t go wrong with a white shirt and a dark, fitted jacket. Go without a tie for a more relaxed look, or add a tie for a more professional look.
  7. BRING COORDINATING BOTTOMS—Many shots are 3/4 length. Bring pants or jeans that match your selected shirts; that way, if your knee or hip is in the frame, you’ll be stylishly covered.
  8. SOCKS & SHOES—Wear coordinating shoes and socks. Cross-legged poses sometimes bring feet into the frame.
  9. ACCESSORIES—You may want to do shots with or without glasses. Even holding glasses can create a statement. Bring rings, watches, and cuff links as desired.
  10. NAILS—Come with clean, manicured nails. Hands are often in the frame with headshots. Tend to your fingernails and polish your wristwatch and rings, too, if you wish.

Getting in front of the camera can be nerve-wracking, so I want you to feel well-prepared and look your best for a relaxed and fun session. I will coach you through poses to create the look that captures you from your best angle. Here are a few last-minute tips:

  • Plan to arrive ten minutes early so we can start promptly. If you are late, you will cut into your session time. There are no refunds or rescheduling if you are late. Be on time, be prepared, and have fun.
  • Don’t get your hair cut or dyed within one week of the shoot. Give yourself time to get used to the cut so you can style it confidently on the day of your session.
  • Don’t make any drastic changes to your appearance right before the session. You will set yourself up for disappointment. Your headshot and branding portraits should look like you plan to attend an important meeting or audition. Keep it natural.
  • Get a good night’s rest before the session and avoid drinking alcohol or eating salty foods for 24-48 hours ahead of time. Plenty of rest and water will do wonders for how you look and feel.
  • If you have any questions about your session or need advice leading up to the date, email heike@heikemartinphotography.com or text 717-342-3369. I am here for you!
